Like many residents I am aware of, and have experienced, increased mosquito activity over recent weeks. It is a characteristic of our sub-tropical climate and occurs in Brisbane at this time of year. While Council seeks to minimise the impact of mosquitoes through a range of measures they cannot be eliminated.
Council undertakes aerial and ground based spraying of mosquito larvae in wetland areas such as the Boondall Wetlands, where salt marsh mosquitoes hatch, to minimise the number that reach maturity. Aerial spraying does not target adult mosquitoes and does not take place over residential areas. It takes 7 – 10 days for eggs to become larvae and then adults. The link below provides additional information on Council spraying program. https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/…/invasive…/mosquitoes
Mosquitoes breed in locations other than wetlands so residents are encouraged to minimise breeding sources around their houses and take protective action, as necessary. Adult mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk and will take refuge during the day in foliage where it is more humid and cooler. Further updates will be provided on my Facebook as they come to hand.
